The name "Landjuweel" was used by poet-groups in sixteenth century Flanders. At the festival, several groups of poets gathered and showed each other their mystery plays. (Juweel -literally jewel- comes from the french "joel", meaning celebration.) In 1985, the Amsterdam Balloon Company carried the tradition further and from then she organises each year an art-festival around the full moon of August, where artists and connaisseurs meet for mutual inspiration. It is a festival full of experiments, where generations meet, experiences are shared, old patterns are broken, new art-forms emerge and free spirits are invited to do their thing. Since it's small beginning, the festival has developed to a celebration with thousands of people. Especially the midnight-parade around the sculpture route, where groups and individuals show their arts, is an ever returning highlight where music and dancing goes on untill long after daybreak.
